ART as LANDSCAPE, ART as ABSTRACT

In my work, I try to find that sweet spot, the middle, between abstraction and landscape. I love both. I love wandering outdoors, hiking, and exploring. I am a country girl, not a city girl. The forests, streams, fields, waters and wide open spaces speak to me and inspire me. However, I also love abstract painting. Thus how I fit into this crazy art world is by trying to meld the two hopefully in my own unique style.

Recently I have enjoyed working large, like 30x40” to 60x80”, where as 20 years ago I enjoyed working small scale. I’m not sure how this happened but I can attribute it to the ‘freedom’ you experience and the ‘looseness’ that encapsulates you when you are working on a larger scale. Or it could be that I now spend my winters in Santa Fe, out in the wide open spaces. My materials (oil, cold wax, pigment powders, dirt, oil sticks, powdered graphite, marble dust) lend themselves to layers and textures, much like the earth that I walk on. When I sit in nature and just ‘be’ I find myself drawn to the shapes and colors and never have the desire to ‘capture’ the scene in a realistic manner. What I really want to capture is the ‘feeling’ or ‘emotion’ of the place. I have always been drawn to a ‘less is more’ or ‘minimalist’ art style. One could call my work an Abstracted Minimalist style. Or at least that is what I am trying to accomplish and as one knows the art journey is a lifelong journey. Thanks for being a part of it!
